MPS ACCELERATES GREEN TERMINAL VISION – REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT WITH ELECTRIC MOBILITY

As part of its ambitious Green Terminal initiative and firm commitment to environmental stewardship, Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS) has initiated a significant investment in state-of-the-art electric terminal equipment and just received 20 trucks and heavy-duty trailers to roll-out for the container handling operations at MPS Terminal 3, Tema Port.

This strategic investment marks a major milestone in MPS’s long-term sustainability journey, reinforcing its position as a leading terminal operator that is shaping the future of port logistics in West Africa through innovation and responsible operations.

The newly acquired electric terminal trucks are a vital step towards reducing the port’s carbon footprint, contributing to Ghana’s broader climate goals and aligning with the global shipping industry’s transition to low-emission logistics. These electric units will replace a portion of the conventional diesel-powered fleet, leading to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality within the terminal.

Speaking on the development, Mohamed Samara, CEO of MPS, noted:

“This investment is a clear demonstration of our shareholders’ commitment to sustainability, innovation, and our people. The electric trucks are not only environmentally friendly, but also more efficient and quieter in operation, transforming both our ecological impact and the daily experience of our operators.”

Enhanced Operator Comfort and Safety

Beyond the environmental benefits, the electric terminal trucks offer enhanced ergonomics and a more comfortable, quieter ride for the operators, with advanced cabin features that reduce fatigue and improve visibility and control. The transition to electric vehicles is also expected to boost operational efficiency, productivity and reduce maintenance downtime, thanks to their simpler drivetrain systems and intelligent onboard diagnostics.

The acquisition is a step forward in the Green Terminal Journey and a significant part of MPS’s broader Green Terminal Program, which includes renewable energy integration, resource conservation, and digitalization efforts to improve efficiency and reduce the terminal’s overall environmental footprint.

MPS has already made notable strides in energy usage making buildings more resource-efficient in energy and water. All office buildings and workshop facilities are EDGE Certified (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) which is a green building certification system developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group.

By leading the charge in electrification and sustainability, MPS continues to set new standards for responsible port operations in the region through:

  • Zero emissions: Improves air quality at terminals.
  • Quieter operations: Reduces noise, improving work environment.
  • Lower maintenance & operating costs: Fewer moving parts and cheaper fuel (electricity vs. diesel).
  • High efficiency: Instant torque, and optimized energy use cut idle consumption.
  • Operator comfort & safety: Cabin with air suspension, and Driver’s fatigue warning system.
  • Real-time Vehicle Data Collection with live Monitoring & Remote-Control Including Fault Detection & Predictive Maintenance and driving behaviour Analytics & Reporting
