MPS Workers Lead the Way in Environmental Sustainability -Planting Today for a Greener Tomorrow

Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS) continues to demonstrate that sustainable business growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. For the past six years, the company’s employees have been at the forefront of a remarkable environmental initiative that has transformed landscapes, strengthened community engagement, and reinforced MPS’s commitment to sustainability.

The journey began in November 2019 when MPS launched a tree-planting campaign dubbed “Planting the Way to the New Port Facility.” The inaugural exercise was carried out along the Tema Beach Road from the Western Gate of Tema Port leading to the gate of MPS Terminal 3 (the site of the Tema Port Expansion Project), with the objective of contributing to environmental sustainability while beautifying the surrounding area. The initiative symbolised MPS’s determination to ensure that infrastructure development is accompanied by responsible environmental stewardship.

At the launch of the programme, the Chief Executive Officer of MPS, Mohamed Samara, announced a simple yet ambitious vision: every employee would plant at least one tree each year. This commitment reflected the company’s belief that collective action, sustained over time, can make a meaningful contribution to preserving the environment for future generations.

Over the years, the initiative has evolved into one of MPS’s most visible and impactful environmental programmes. Hundreds of employees have voluntarily participated in the annual exercise, joined by personnel from the company’s major contractors and business partners. Together, they have planted thousands of trees, helping to increase green cover, enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, and contribute to climate resilience within the Tema area and beyond.

A Growing Tradition

What began as a symbolic gesture has grown into a well-established annual tradition. The continued success of the programme is driven by the enthusiasm and commitment of MPS employees themselves. Year after year, colleagues from across the organisation come together outside their normal duties to actively support environmental conservation efforts, demonstrating that sustainability is not merely a corporate objective but a shared value embedded throughout the company culture.

The initiative has also become a powerful platform for employee engagement, fostering teamwork, ownership, and a collective sense of responsibility towards the environment. It reflects the belief that every individual can contribute to building a more sustainable future.

This Year’s Expedition: Extending the Impact

This year’s edition further expanded the reach and impact of the programme. In addition to planting trees within neighbouring communities around Tema, MPS employees extended their efforts to the Shai Hills Resource Reserve, one of Ghana’s most important ecological and wildlife conservation areas.

The community tree-planting activities helped enhance local green spaces, promote environmental awareness, and strengthen the relationship between MPS and the communities in which it operates. Through these efforts, employees contributed directly to improving the quality of the local environment while encouraging greater appreciation for the importance of preserving green spaces.

At Shai Hills, employees participated in reforestation activities aimed at supporting conservation efforts, protecting biodiversity, and restoring natural habitats for wildlife. The exercise also provided an educational experience, highlighting the critical role that forests and protected areas play in combating climate change, preserving ecosystems, and safeguarding Ghana’s natural heritage for future generations.

The expansion of the programme beyond the immediate port environment demonstrates MPS’s commitment to creating a broader and more lasting environmental impact, extending the benefits of its sustainability initiatives to communities and conservation areas alike.

More Than Planting Trees

The annual tree-planting campaign reflects a broader sustainability mindset within MPS. As one of Ghana’s leading port operators, the company recognises that its operational success must be balanced with responsible environmental practices and a long-term commitment to sustainable development.

Beyond the number of trees planted, the initiative has helped foster a culture of environmental responsibility among employees. It demonstrates that sustainability is not the responsibility of a single department or function, but a collective effort in which every employee has a role to play.

The continued success of the programme also reflects MPS’s wider commitment to responsible business practices and its determination to contribute positively to the communities and environment within which it operates.

Planting Today for a Greener Tomorrow

As MPS continues to grow and support Ghana’s trade and economic development, its employees remain committed to ensuring that environmental sustainability remains an integral part of that journey. The company will continue to build on the success of its annual tree-planting programme, strengthen partnerships with communities and conservation organisations, and explore additional opportunities to reduce its environmental footprint.

Through initiatives such as “Planting the Way to the New Port Facility,” MPS is not only developing world-class port infrastructure but also helping to create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future.

Six years on, the trees planted by MPS employees stand as living symbols of a commitment that continues to flourish; one tree, one employee, and one community at a time.

From the shores of Tema to the landscapes of Shai Hills, MPS employees are proving that small actions, consistently repeated, can create lasting environmental change.
