History continues to unfold at the Tema Port with the acquisition of nineteen (19) state‑of‑the‑art gantry cranes, comprising three (3) Ship‑to‑Shore (STS) quay cranes and sixteen (16) electric Rubber‑Tyred Gantry (e‑RTG) cranes by Meridian Port Services Limited (MPS). This visionary move reinforces Ghana’s position as a premier maritime logistics hub in West Africa.

The strategic investment, valued at USD 72.5 million, underscores MPS’s continued commitment to operational excellence, sustainability, and globally competitive port services.
The nineteen (19) cranes, received in succession in April 2026, were welcomed by a delegation of senior ministerial and management executives from the Ministry of Transport, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and MPS.
The newly acquired STS cranes are Ultra Post‑Panamax units with an outreach of 69 metres, enabling them to reach the 24th row across container vessels’ decks. They are uniquely engineered to service the new generation of ultra‑large container vessels, positioning the Port of Tema to efficiently handle increasing vessel sizes and cargo volumes.

Describing the investment as a defining milestone in the company’s growth trajectory, Mr. Mohamed Samara, Chief Executive Officer of MPS said:
“This USD 72.5 million investment goes beyond the acquisition of equipment; it represents our commitment to efficiency, reliability, and the future readiness of the terminal through the advanced technology embedded in these cranes. The new equipment will significantly enhance our operational capabilities, enabling MPS to deliver faster, safer, and more environmentally sustainable services to shipping lines, cargo owners, and the Ghanaian economy. It reaffirms our unwavering commitment to world‑class, competitive port operations. Ultimately, the economic benefits of this investment far exceed its cost, as it increases the port’s handling capacity from 2.5 million TEUs to 3 million TEUs.”

The Honourable Minister for Transport, represented by the Director General of Ghana Maritime Authority, Dr. Kamal Deen-Ali, highlighted the national significance of the investment:
“On behalf of the Honourable Minister of Transport and the Government, we commend MPS for its continued investment in the port. This development aligns strongly with the Government’s vision to transform Ghana into a competitive maritime and logistics hub in West Africa. Strategic investments of this nature enhance trade facilitation, strengthen supply chains, create employment opportunities, and support sustainable economic growth. It also demonstrates the Government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment in which investors can thrive and realise returns on their investments.”
The Director‑General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Brig. Gen. Paul Seidu Tanye‑Kulono, emphasized the broader impact on port operations and regional competitiveness:
“For GPHA, efficiency across our ports remains a key priority, and these cranes will contribute significantly to faster turnaround times. This forms part of our broader port development plan aimed at enhancing operations at Tema Port. Last year, we handled 2.3 million TEUs, and we are well on our way to consolidating Ghana’s standing as a preferred maritime gateway within the sub‑region. To cater for future demand, we are also considering an expansion to add five additional berths along the quay wall.”
The electric RTGs, powered by electricity, contribute to reduced carbon emissions and quieter terminal operations, in line with MPS’s sustainability agenda and international best practices. Collectively, the new equipment enhances yard productivity, vessel turnaround times, and overall terminal efficiency.

With this latest investment, MPS continues to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable, efficient, and globally competitive port operations, translating Ghana’s maritime vision into tangible action.
