Following the awarding of the civil works contract for the second phase of the Tema Port Expansion Project to the joint venture comprising EIFFAGE Génie Civil Marine SA & De Simone Ltd in June 2023, the contractors have demonstrated their preparedness to realize the project by successfully mobilizing the necessary resources to commence the works.

On September 6th, 2023, members of the MPS Management Team conducted an inspection to assess progress on the works and specifically to participate in a site safety walk to observe the safety measures that has been put in place.

Mr. Mohamed Samara, CEO of MPS, underscored the paramount importance of safety in the project. He stated, “Safety is our top priority at MPS. While meeting project deadlines is crucial, we must prioritize the implementation of robust workplace health, safety, and welfare systems. Our ultimate goal is to complete the project with zero injuries. The safety record from Phase 1 was impeccable, and I urge everyone to maintain this standard throughout Phase 2”.

The project’s scope encompasses the meticulous paving of an extensive area covering 270,000 square meters, utilizing 14 million high-standard pavement blocks to ensure the stability required for heavy crane operations. Additionally, it includes the installation of 16 kilometres of cable conduits and 5.5 kilometres of drainage pipes, facilitating the expansion of the terminal’s holding capacity from 100 hectares to 127 hectares.

The expansion project aims to enhance the Tema Port’s infrastructure capacity and productivity to meet the growing demands of trade and connectivity in the region.

Mr. Abdoul-Rachid Alfa-Traore, Project Manager for MPS, provided an update on the project’s progress, stating, “The contractors have already taken steps to meet our scheduled completion date in September 2025. The project will be delivered in phases, with our current focus on levelling the sand bed and the subbase formation for the pavement installation. By July 2024, we aim to have completed and handed over the first section of the project (5 of the 27 hectares) to the operations team”.

Mr. Saad Allah Amjad, Project Manager for EIFFAGE Génie Civil, emphasized their commitment to safety through daily pre-task briefings, weekly management safety inspections, and meetings.

Mr. Greg Le Roux, Project Manager for De Simone, affirmed their adherence to a high standard of safety in their operations. He mentioned, “With over 50 years of experience in civil, mining, residential, and commercial construction throughout West Africa, we ensure that all staff are well-versed in the safety requirements of every project we undertake. This culture of safety is equally implemented here”.

Mr. Ernest Lartey, the Project Manager for the Project Management Consultants, AECOM, reported the completion of all third-party assessments and certifications for project equipment and operators. He also noted that the project has already achieved 27,060 LTI-free man-hours and encouraged the entire project team to continue adhering to mandated safety guidelines by conducting prior risk assessments for every on-site task.

The execution of Phase 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project will generate significant employment opportunities for the Ghanaian construction workforce, equipping them with valuable skills for future endeavours. MPS remains dedicated to promoting regional trade growth and establishing an efficient trade connectivity platform for Ghana and West Africa.
