MPS Expects Next-Gen Equipment Fleet to Power Expansion to 3 Million TEUs

Tema, Ghana – March 2026, Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS), operator of Terminal 3 at the Port of Tema, is set to significantly enhance its operational capacity with the arrival of a new generation of terminal equipment currently en route to Ghana.

On 24 February 2026, the heavy load carrier RAM COMMANDER departed with 16 electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry (eRTG) cranes destined for MPS. The vessel is presently sailing through the Indian Ocean after passing the northwest tip of Madagascar and is expected to round the Cape of Good Hope before proceeding to Tema. The vessel is scheduled to arrive at MPS Terminal 3 on 16 April 2026, subject to weather conditions.

The 16 eRTG cranes will be followed closely by three (3) additional Ship-to-Shore (STS) gantry cranes, currently being transported aboard the heavy lift vessel Zhenhua 32. The vessel departed Shanghai five days ago and is navigating through the waters of Southeast Asia en route to Ghana. Sailing at approximately 11 knots, the vessel is expected to arrive at Terminal-3 of the Port of Tema on 20 April 2026.

The arrival of this new equipment forms part of MPS’s ongoing investment programme aimed at responding to sustained growth in container traffic and strengthening the Port of Tema’s position as a leading maritime gateway in West Africa.

With the deployment of the new cranes, the terminal’s equipment fleet will expand from 12 to 15 Ship-to-Shore cranes on the quay and from 35 to 51 electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes in the yard, significantly increasing yard handling capacity and operational efficiency.

Further strengthening this expansion, 41 electric Terminal Trucks are scheduled to be delivered by the end of June 2026, supporting faster container movements between the quay and the yard while contributing to MPS’s sustainability objectives through increased electrification of terminal operations.

These investments will increase the terminal’s annual handling capacity from 2.5 million TEUs to 3.0 million TEUs, reinforcing MPS’s ability to meet growing regional trade demand while maintaining high standards of efficiency, reliability, and service delivery.

Commenting on the expansion, Mohamed Samara, CEO of Meridian Port Services Ltd, said:
“The arrival of these state-of-the-art cranes and supporting equipment marks a significant milestone in MPS’s growth journey. By increasing our capacity and operational efficiency, we are not only meeting rising market demand but also reinforcing our commitment to delivering world-class port services and contributing to Ghana’s economic development.”

Since the commissioning of Terminal 3 by the end of 2019, MPS has consistently invested in world-class infrastructure, advanced equipment, and digitalized operations to support Ghana’s trade and position the Port of Tema as a strategic hub for containerized cargo and transshipment traffic across West and Central Africa.

MPS is proudly operated as a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Africa Global Logistics (AGL), and APM Terminals, combining local expertise, regional experience, and global best practices to deliver sustainable, efficient, and world-class port operations. This latest expansion further underscores the shareholders’ shared commitment to driving growth, facilitating trade, and strengthening the Port of Tema’s position as West Africa’s leading container terminal.
