The Acting Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr. Anthony Sarpong, paid a courtesy visit to Meridian Port Services Ltd. (MPS) at Terminal 3, Port of Tema, on Wednesday, 12th March 2025. The visit was part of his nationwide tour of key tax centres and Customs collection points.

Mr. Sarpong and his delegation were warmly received by the MPS Management Team, led by Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mohamed Samara. The discussions provided valuable insights into MPS’s operations, infrastructure investments, and future plans.

The Commissioner General commended MPS for its commitment to modernising the port environment through extensive infrastructure upgrades and digitalisation initiatives. He noted that these investments align with GRA’s strategic objective of improving tax compliance, expanding the tax base, and ensuring efficient revenue mobilisation for 2025.

During a boardroom presentation, Mr. Samara highlighted MPS’s crucial role in positioning Ghana as a major transshipment hub. He stated:
“MPS continues to champion Ghana’s viability as a transhipment hub, with Terminal 3 at Tema Port serving as a critical infrastructure asset. The terminal boasts state-of-the-art superstructures and advanced technology, rivalling leading global hub ports in quality and capacity. Its acceptance by major shipping lines is a testament to the realisation of our transhipment vision. In the past year alone, transhipment volumes through Terminal 3 reached 668,158 TEUs.”
The MPS CEO further explained that Terminal 3 has become a key gateway, facilitating trade between global markets and neighbouring countries from Cameroon to Senegal. Additionally, Ghana’s transit corridor through Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali is gaining prominence. He emphasized that providing competitive and cost-effective trade solutions is essential to sustaining this critical corridor. Being a regional hub not only generates significant revenue for Ghana but also strengthens connectivity between Ghana’s trade and industrial base and regional markets. This will certainly lead to creating jobs and economic earning from exporting value.
Mr. Samara stressed on the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, stating:
“The success and efficiency of these key infrastructure investments hinge on partnerships between government agencies and relevant authorities. I am pleased to acknowledge the strong and consistent support of the Ghana Revenue Authority, particularly the Customs Division, throughout our years of operation.”
MPS has implemented cutting-edge technologies to improve border security while safeguarding state revenue. As a result, the company has been certified as an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO), making it one of the first nine companies in Ghana to attain this prestigious status. This recognition by the GRA Customs Division further reinforces MPS’s strategic role as an economic enabler and global trade facilitator.
Additionally, Mr. Samara announced MPS’s Shareholders’ commitment to constructing a dedicated expressway connecting the Accra-Tema Motorway (Ashaiman Interchange) to MPS Terminal 3. This project involves upgrading Hospital Road and Meridian Road to enhance accessibility to the port.

The visit concluded with a guided tour of various MPS departments, where the delegation observed port operations in action and engaged with dedicated staff contributing to Ghana’s economic growth.
