In furtherance of its role as an economic enabler, Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS) announces the launch of the Alternative Livelihood Project. This transformative program aims to equip 100 youth from five fishing communities with essential vocational and technical skills, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and diversified income sources for coastal residents.
The official launch and community engagement event took place at the Canoe Basin at the Tema Fishing Harbour and was graced by esteemed guests, including community leaders, chief fishermen, the Vice President of the Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association, representatives from Meridian Port Services (MPS), officials from Global Communities, and the Ghana TVET Service.

Managed by Global Communities, an international NGO renowned for implementing impactful livelihood programs, the Alternative Livelihood Project is set to run for a duration of six months to one year, depending on the specific training program. Beneficiaries will acquire valuable skills in various fields, including cosmetology, hairdressing, electronics, and woodwork, among others.
Mr. Frank Ebo Brown, Head of Legal and Compliance for MPS, encouraged the beneficiaries to seize this opportunity to make a positive impact in their communities. “This program is a unique chance for you to build a better future for yourselves and your families. Make the most of it and become agents of change in your communities,” he stated.
Dr. Eben Anuwa-Amah, a consultant and spokesperson for the beneficiary fishing communities, highlighted the significance of the initiative. “Diversifying income sources is crucial for the sustainability of our coastal communities. This project will empower our youth with the skills they need to thrive in various industries, ensuring a brighter future for all,” he emphasized.

Back in 2022, MPS donated 2,000 bundles of fishing nets (total 20,000 units of fishing nets), 30 Yamaha 40 horsepower outboard motors and 2 Large Fishing Canoes with accessories worth USD 500,000.00 (close to six million Ghana Cedis) to fishing communities in the Greater Accra Region.
At a ceremony to hand over the items to the fisherfolk, the Chief Executive Officer of MPS, Mr. Mohamed Samara elaborated that the MPS shareholders believe in sustainable development which creates a knock-on effect on people. “We are focused on the growth of human resources (direct and in direct jobs creation) by creating opportunities, boosting knowledge, skills, and we will continue to invest in the type of corporate social initiatives that will positively impact society at large” Mr. Samara said.

The impact of the Port Infrastructure as catalyst of economic development can be described as both direct and indirect. In the direct sense, the port creates jobs for its staff and services related to the port while indirectly creating jobs for organisations that are economically dependent on port activities. MPS is very much committed to seeing through its vision to grow Tema as a hub, not only a transport facilitator, but an economic hub that attracts investment into factories which in effect impacts Ghana’s social and economic life.
The Alternative Livelihood Project represents a significant step towards sustainable development and economic empowerment for the youth in Ghana’s fishing communities.
