The Tema Port Expansion Project has reached another major milestone, reinforcing Ghana’s drive to enhance its maritime infrastructure and competitiveness. Phase 2 of the expansion is designed to boost the port’s handling capacity and operational efficiency, further positioning Ghana as a leading trade hub in West Africa.
On 26th April 2025, Section 2 of Phase 2 — encompassing an additional 80,000 square meters of paving and utility works — was officially handed over to operations by the MPS Project Team.
A key highlight of this section is the installation of 80,000 square meters of Cement Bound Granular Material (CBGM), laid in three successive layers to form a durable base designed to support heavy cargo operations. Over this robust foundation, more than 4 million paving blocks have been meticulously installed, providing long-term structural integrity while simplifying maintenance.
To strengthen security and monitoring capabilities, six high-mast lighting poles have been erected, each equipped with 17 HD cameras offering a 400-meter coverage range. These systems, together with strategically placed Wi-Fi units, enable seamless surveillance and communication across the operational area.
Rainwater management has been another critical focus. To protect infrastructure and maintain operational continuity during heavy rainfall, 400 meters of reinforced ACO drainage systems have been installed, ensuring efficient stormwater runoff and minimizing the risk of flooding.
Designed for operational excellence, Section 2 introduces optimized container stacking zones and clearly marked traffic lanes, facilitating the smooth and safe movement of trucks and equipment, and significantly reducing congestion within the terminal.
To date, 20 hectares out of the total 27 hectares — spanning Section 1 and Section 2 — have been completed and handed over to operations. This achievement includes:
- Installation of 10 million paving blocks and 140,000m³ of CBGM
- Erection of 12 lighting masts and installation of approximately 44 CCTV cameras
- Installation and energization of 400 meters of busbars
- Construction of four substations, two of which are fully equipped with 2000KVA transformers
- Installation of 2,434 meters of ACO drainage
- Laying and energization of 16,000 meters of electrical cabling
- Completion and commissioning of 2,023 meters of fire network systems.
Construction on the remaining 7 hectares is actively progressing and is scheduled for completion and handover by the end of September 2025.
These infrastructure developments form part of a broader vision initiated in 2019. As Mr. Mohamed Samara, CEO of Meridian Port Services Ltd., remarked,
“The infrastructure upgrades demonstrate not only Ghana’s commitment to modernizing its ports but also a long-term vision of positioning MPS as a central player in the African maritime economy.”

On the same day as the Section 2 handover, MPS Terminal 3 proudly welcomed the ultra-large container vessel MSC TÜRKIYE, a 400-meter-long, with a 61-meter beam, marking her one of the largest vessels ever to berth in Sub-Saharan Africa. This historic call reflects the strategic importance and enhanced capabilities delivered by the Tema Port Expansion Project.
