
On Monday, 24th March 2025, Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS), in collaboration with maritime and shipping industry leaders, paid tribute to the extraordinary life and achievements of Alhaji Asoma Banda, a trailblazer in Ghana’s shipping and aviation sectors.
The event was a testament to Alhaji Banda’s profound impact on the industry and the countless lives he influenced throughout his illustrious career.
Alhaji Banda, who passed away on 1st March 2025 at the age of 92, was celebrated not only for his remarkable business acumen but also for his achievement to the development of Ghana’s maritime sector. As Chairman of OTAL and the Antrak Group of Companies, his visionary leadership reshaped Ghana’s shipping landscape and, by extension, that of West and Central Africa.
Key industry stakeholders shared heartfelt tributes, highlighting Alhaji Banda’s immense contributions and the enduring mark he left on the sector. Panellists described him as a visionary entrepreneur and a national asset whose pioneering efforts transformed both domestic air travel and shipping in Ghana. They emphasised his resilience and ability to identify potential where others saw challenges, inspiring future generations to follow in his footsteps.
Mr. Mohamed Samara, CEO of Meridian Port Services Ltd, delivered a moving tribute, reflecting on Alhaji Banda’s defining traits that cemented his legacy in the shipping industry. He credited Alhaji Banda’s strategic foresight, firm dedication, and innovative spirit as instrumental in shaping Ghana into a leading maritime hub for West and Central Africa. Notably, the establishment of MPS Terminal 3, the largest, most technologically advanced container terminal seaport in Sub-Saharan Africa, stood as a testament to Alhaji Banda’s enduring Chairmanship. Mr. Samara further highlighted his significant role in strengthening Ghana’s transport sector, enhancing the nation’s competitiveness in global trade.

Mr. Samara also noted Alhaji Banda’s unparalleled commitment to excellence, his ability to navigate complex challenges, and his relentless pursuit of progress. He was one of the founders and Chairman of OT Africa Line (OTAL), which later merged with DELMAS Line before being acquired by CMA CGM. From the 1980s into the early 2000s, OTAL played a crucial role in building maritime capacity, becoming the third-largest shipping line service in West Africa and setting the benchmark for freight movement, project logistics, and tailored distribution services on land.
Beyond his business achievements, the event reflected on the values Alhaji Banda embodied, his dedication to developing Ghana’s maritime infrastructure, mentoring young entrepreneurs, and serving as a father figure to many. His contributions remain a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic development, and his legacy will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of shipping and aviation in the country.
As the event concluded, Mr. Samara reflected on Alhaji Banda’s personal qualities, describing him as a man of honour, generosity, and deep compassion. He was a leader with wisdom, real-life stories to share, and invaluable lessons to pass on.
