Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS) has successfully marked another significant milestone with the handover of the second section of the ongoing Phase 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project.

This achievement represents the completion of an additional 80,000 square meters of the project’s total 270,000-square-meter development, along with a 525 m² steel-framed warehouse. The work was executed by the contractor joint venture EIFFAGE Génie Civil Marine SA & De Simone Ltd and CONSAR Ltd, under the supervision of AECOM, the project management consultants.

Notably, this milestone coincided with the celebration of two million safe working hours without any lost-time injuries (LTI) on this project, an outstanding testament to the commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Phase 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project involves the development of a 270,000-square-meter area, designed to withstand the demands of heavy port operations. This expansion enhances efficiency in cargo handling and reaffirms MPS’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s position as a premier maritime and trade hub.
With this phased handover, the total completed yard space in the Phase 2 Project now stands at 200,000 square meters. The infrastructure incorporates:
- 14 million high-strength pavement blocks
- 16 Km of cable conduits
- 5.5 Km of drainage pipes
Ultimately, this expansion increases the terminal’s total footprint from 100 hectares to 127 hectares (1.27 million square meters), entirely reclaimed from the Atlantic Ocean, a remarkable feat of engineering.
Speaking on the milestone, MPS Project Manager, Mr. Abdoul-Rachid Alfa-Traore, emphasized the company’s unwavering dedication to safety. “From daily toolbox talks to proactive safety observations, the collaborative efforts of MPS, AECOM, and all contractors – APOTICA, CONSAR, DE-SIMONE, EIFFAGE, E2E, and NESSTRA – have been instrumental in achieving this significant safety record,” he stated.
As part of the celebration, 15 employees who demonstrated exceptional commitment to safety, quality, and excellence were recognized and awarded. Global Director for AECOM, Mr. Craig Thackray, congratulated the project team, acknowledging the notable improvements since his last visit when the team celebrated one million safe working hours without LTI. He expressed optimism for a continued fruitful partnership with MPS in the years ahead.

Meanwhile, the CEO of MPS, Mr. Mohamed Samara, reaffirmed the shareholders’ commitment to Ghana’s economic growth through the delivery of world-class trade infrastructure. “This project cements Ghana’s place on the global logistics map while championing sustainable business practices. With safety, efficiency, and innovation at its core, MPS continues to set new benchmarks in the maritime industry, ensuring Ghana remains a leader in international trade,” he noted.
A Promising Economic Outlook
Today, Ghana, led by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, stands at a critical juncture in reviving its economy through the 24-hour economy policy. This bold initiative is dedicated to transforming Ghana into a self-reliant, industrially competitive, and export-driven nation. As strategic trade infrastructure like the Tema Port Expansion plays a crucial role in facilitating economic growth, MPS remains committed to supporting Ghana’s vision of becoming a global logistics powerhouse.
