In a strategic leap aimed at fortifying its commitment to service reliability for users of Terminal 3 at Tema Port, Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS) has embarked on Phase 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project. This expansion extends the port platform to an impressive 127 hectares, furnished with cutting-edge equipment poised to revolutionise port operations and elevate customer experiences.

The recent development includes the addition of 27 hectares of yard storage capacity and the incorporation of 15 state-of-the-art electric gantry cranes powered by high-voltage current (20,000 volts). Recognising the critical importance of an uninterrupted power supply to sustain enhanced cargo-handling capacities, MPS has undertaken a significant upgrade to its existing backup power generation plant from 12 MVA to 21 MVA.

This power upgrade ensures that even in the event of a power outage from the national grid, an optimal number of cranes – 12 on the quay and 41 in the yard – remain operational. This commitment cements Tema Port Terminal 3 as one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s most efficient ports, drawing acclaim from leading global shipping lines.

This milestone features MPS’s dedication to providing round-the-clock service delivery to its esteemed clientele, ensuring operational efficiency and reliability during power supply interruptions via the national grid.

The contract signing ceremony, held on May 29, 2024, at MPS Terminal 3 in Tema, witnessed the expression of confidence from Mr. Mohamed Samara, CEO of MPS, in Kohler and their official distributor, Nesstra Ghana Ltd., to deliver on their promises. The decision to entrust Kohler and Nesstra with this crucial project stems from their proven track record in providing tailored mechanical and electrical solutions.

At the ceremony, Mr. Ramy Youssef and Mostafa Serag, Chief Sales Officer and Project Manager at NESSTRA respectively, reiterated their firm commitment to exceeding expectations of the MPS CEO regarding delivery and commissioning timelines. This assurance reflects the dedication of both companies to excellence in every aspect of the Tema Port Expansion Project.

Overseeing the tendering process and project implementation are Mr. Abdoul-Rachid Alfa-Traore and Mr. Godfred Carl Crentsil from the MPS Project Team, along with the support of AECOM Project Manager Mr. Ernest Lartey. The collaborative effort ensures meticulous attention to detail and adherence to project timelines.

The scope of the contract encompasses the design, procurement, installation, and integration of three upgraded and prime-rated KOHLER/SDMO generators, augmenting the existing standby power station by an additional 9 MVA. Furthermore, comprehensive training and knowledge transfer to MPS’s Asset Maintenance team are integral components of the contract.

Works are anticipated to be rigorously tested and commissioned by September 2025, aligning with the completion of civil works in October and facilitating a seamless handover to the MPS Operations team for Phase 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project.
