The highly anticipated visit of Madam Maria Fernanda Garza, Chairperson of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), to Ghana commenced with a notable stop at the Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS) container terminal in Tema Port.

Accompanied by a distinguished delegation comprising members of the business community, legal experts, and diplomatic representatives, Madam Garza embarked on a comprehensive tour of the MPS Terminal 3 at Tema Port on Tuesday, 5th March 2024. This visit provided an invaluable opportunity for the delegation to gain insights into the sophisticated operations of top-geared container terminal.

Upon arrival, Mr. Emmanuel Doni Kwame, the ICC Ghana Secretary General, introduced the delegates and the significance role of MPS in the trade and commerce landscape, emphasising the importance of understanding seaports’ operational framework.

Welcomed by MPS management, including Mr. Curtiss Dakpogan, Chief Operations Officer, and Mrs. Fatimatou Bah, Finance Manager, the delegation was led by Mr. Mohamed Samara, the Chief Executive Officer, through an illuminating presentation on the company’s journey in establishing a strategic transshipment hub for West and Central Africa.

Mr. Samara highlighted the efficiency of the terminal, boasting of streamlined processes that have optimised the supply chain stating “Our efficiency in receipt and delivery of containers from/to shippers and consignees is measured in minutes, not hours or days, a testament to the robust processes we’ve meticulously implemented. Through comprehensive pre-planning and precise execution, we’ve effectively minimised wastage in all its forms. Our concerted efforts in advancing transhipment trade have yielded remarkable results, evidenced by multiple shipping lines designating Tema Port as their 1st Port of call and primary hub/destination. This strategic shift has notably slashed shipment durations, delivering substantial advantages to both shipping companies and consignees, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the entire supply chain“.

During a tour of the Planning Department, Mr. Dakpogan revealed the digitalised operational planning process, showcasing the integration of advanced technology and business intelligence tools to ensure seamless execution and immediate corrective actions when necessary.

In advocating for collaborative efforts to harness the potential of Africa’s trade market, The CEO of MPS emphasised the importance of developing transport and trade infrastructure, echoing the aspirations of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Africa’s trade potential remains largely untapped due to inadequate infrastructure. Developing robust transport and trade facilities, such as those exemplified here, is pivotal in unleashing the continent’s market opportunities. The sheer magnitude of this market underscores the vast potential awaiting exploration. We firmly believe that concerted efforts in infrastructure development hold the key to unlocking Africa’s economic capability ” Mr. Samara added.

Madam Garza, in her official remarks, lauded the MPS team for their commendable efforts in delivering pivotal trade infrastructure. She also inquired about challenges regarding investor confidence in Ghana, to which Mr. Samara reaffirmed the country’s political stability and conducive business environment. Highlighting MPS’s resilience through political transitions, Mr. Samara emphasised the company’s commitment to ethics and compliance, and its sustainable business model.

Following an extensive boardroom presentation, the delegation embarked on a tour of the terminal, gaining firsthand insights into the cargo clearance process.

Madam Maria Fernanda Garza’s visit marks a significant milestone, reaffirming the ICC’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and sustainable business practices.
