The French Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Jules Armand Aniambossou has visited MPS Terminal 3 along with a team of French Trade Advisors. The purpose of the visit was to allow the trade advisors to familiarise themselves with MPS operational activities towards prospective investments.

MPS ROLE IN CONNECTIVITY

The Chief Executive Officer of MPS, Mr. Mohamed Samara shared with the visitors’ details of MPS commitment to the Green Shipping Agenda championed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and gave a presentation on MPS records and accomplishments. He emphasised on MPS digitalisation efforts which has resulted in ease of doing business for port users.

He went on to outline the growth of the company and the investments made till date. He highlighted that the vision of the Company was to utilize the location of the Tema Port along with its enabling factors to become the first port-of- call and a transhipment hub.

“MPS is very much committed to seeing through its vision to grow Tema as a hub, not only a transport facilitator, but an economic hub that attracts investment into factories which in effect impacts Ghana’s social and economic life.”

On MPS activities tailored towards the Green Shipping Agenda, Mr. Samara remarked.

“MPS holds high these values of safety, security, health, environment,  hence the EDGE certification (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiency, an innovation of IFC, a member of the World Bank Group) ISO Management Systems ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 covering quality of service, environment and the occupational health & safety including the Pedestrian-Free Terminal concept that was created by MPS over a decade as well as the recent 2-Stars Green Terminal accreditation received resulting from our efforts to systematically reduce our carbon footprint.”

On his part, the Ambassador and the delegation commended the Shareholders & Management of MPS for the exploits made so far, revealing that there are several French Companies involved in the production of clean fuels.

His Excellency also encouraged the management of MPS to look at human resource development through partnering with educational institutions.

“I believe it will be in the right direction to explore partnerships with Universities in Ghana to help train young people in the areas of interest relevant to MPS operations.” Said Ambassador Aniambossou.

Following the interactive presentation session, the delegation proceeded to the Planning Department of MPS where they were taken through the execution process of operations.

They monitored the giant screens that captured real time data of the activities of vessels alongside and in the yard.  The delegation was subsequently taken on a tour within the terminal to observe the flow operations in the highly sophisticated digital processes.

The visit was summed up with a note of appreciation from H.E the Ambassador who said, “we are highly impressed with the level of development, the impact that you are making and grateful for this successful engagement.”

BACKGROUND

The MPS Terminal 3 infrastructure, an interplay between infrastructure, industrialization and service sectors providing an important platform for trade to support development has since the start of operation in 2019 provided efficient connectivity along the West Coast of Africa.

In anticipation of increased container traffic demand, an additional 16 gantry cranes (3 STS and 13 eRTG) are on order and expected in the 2^nd half of year 2023.

The development of an efficient and integrated multi-modal infrastructure plays a critical role in reducing trade costs and enhancing competitiveness to promote intra- regional trade. Developments of trade –related infrastructure is especially critical for the implementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.
