The Paramount Chief of Tema Dr Osɔnŋaa Nii Adjei Kraku II passed on in 2020 after a short illness.  The funeral of the Paramount Chief is considered as one of the most important cultural events within Tema.  This is because he is the biggest cultural personality in Tema. His final funeral rites were held from 26th to 29th October 2022.

The Tema Port Expansion Area is considered as falling within the jurisdiction of the Tema Traditional Council headed by the Paramount Chief of Tema.   As key community stakeholders, the Tema Traditional Council consisting of the Paramount Chief, the Chiefs, Sub-Chiefs and Elders played a substantial supportive role in the realisation of MPS’  projects.

In remembrance, the CEO of MPS , Mr. Mohamed Samara shared his thoughts on the life of the late Chief.

To everything there is a season, the living know they will die but life is a stage and man would return to his maker after this life on earth.

Today, I pay tribute to the late Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku who was undoubtedly a great leader and paramount chief of the people of Tema.

In my interactions with Nii Adjei Kraku, he demonstrated a great sense of leadership and kind-heartedness. He led his people with dignity and integrity. Nii passionately advocated for and championed the development of the Tema people especially the education of the youth, sanitation, and health facilities for the people of Tema.

When Nii got to realize that I had been working in Tema for over 25 years and led in the building and development of Tema Container Terminal, MPS Terminal 2 and was in the process of developing MPS Terminal 3 we got aligned in our quest to see Tema becoming an industrial hub for Africa. We shared many pleasant memories of the good old days of Tema as planned by the first president of Ghana Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Nii was eager to see Tema transformed into a modern port city. He was fully committed to this cause and never missed any invitation to witness the milestones of the Port Expansion Project. He was ready to provide guidance on matters relating to traditional governance for the peace of all stakeholders.

He was always courteous, moderate in the expression of his views, bold and courageous where boldness and courage were needed; and yet respected all.

Nii passionately believed that we could work together to develop Tema into a good environment where children would be raised to become responsible and visionary future leaders. It is so unfortunate that the icy hands of death took Nii away when we had so many plans for the future of Tema.

As we gather to celebrate and honour Nii’s life, it is important for us to learn and draw lessons from his principles. We should always remember to maintain and promote the great spirit of solidarity in our midst.

And now as we remember his life and the impact that he had on all of us, I know that his spirit will always remain with us.

May his kind and gentle soul rest in eternal peace.

May Allah grant him Janatul Firdaws.

May the ancestors receive him into their bosom.
