On Friday, 13th September 2019, MPS marked the successful completion of its 2nd Road renovation works in the Tema Metropolis with an official ceremony to commission the project.

Present at the ceremony were Government representatives including sector Ministers of Roads & Highways and Transport, Stakeholders of the Port Industry, Traditional Authorities, and cross section of dignitaries from other industries amongst others.

The Keynote Speaker, Minister of Roads and Highways Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Attah ,   under whose supervision the reconstruction works were carried out, while outlining various road projects by the Ministry, emphasized the government’s commitment  to create more roads to enhance connectivity in the port city.

This roundabout also represents the first phase of the Government of Ghana’s Tema Arterial Road Project and is in line with its vision of improving the road network in the Tema Metropolis due to the important role of the Port of Tema in the economic fortunes of the nation.

He further commended MPS for their commitment to road development in the Tema Metropolis stating that this is not the first time MPS has undertaken such a project, the first was at the motorway roundabout which yielded a lot of results, same has been replicated at Tema and we are aware of how beneficial this is to the community.

In a statement read on behalf of the Minister of Transport by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Hon. Daniel Titus-Glover. He stated the necessity of roads in the national development paradigm. He added that the sector ministry was keen on liaising with all stakeholders to improve the transportation in the nation mentioning the ongoing rehabilitation of the railway network as a testament to this goal. He called on other corporate bodies to emulate the posture of MPS towards nation building.

The Director of Tema Port, Madam Sandra Opoku mentioned that the road was essential to the efficient flow of cargo to and from the port. She articulated the Port Authority’s vision to transform cargo handling operations in the Port.

“GPHA as part of its managerial strategy has had the agenda to facilitate trade through ensuring the availability of access roads to and from the port environs. We are presently undertaking other road projects with our partners in this regard. ” said Mrs. Opoku.

In his speech, CEO of MPS Mr. Mohamed Samara advocated for safety on the roads. “the safety of all road users still remains a major concern for us as operators of the Port Facility, we must all work together to reduce the increasing rate of accidents on our roads. We must ensure that only road worthy vehicles use the roads to safeguard lives and property especially in the port environment.  To promote this culture of safety and easy movement at night, the intersection and the slip roads are well illuminated with the erection of 68 standard light poles.”

He also expressed the readiness of the Board of Directors and Shareholders to undertake the Tema Expressway Project which will create an 8-Lane expressway to upgrade the road network capacity in the Tema Metropolis and praised the project team who worked assiduously on the project to speedily complete it.

Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Tema, Hon. Felix Nii Anang- La pledged his outfit’s determination to ensure the maintenance of the roads and called on industries in the Tema enclave to support the Metropolitan Assembly in its bid to restore Tema to its former glory. He encouraged all to be forthcoming with their assistances to facilitate the effective delivery of their mandate.

BACKGROUND

The project which costs 9 million US (45 million Ghana Cedis) is solely financed by shareholders of the Meridian Port Services Ltd as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

It involved the construction of a new roundabout and four slip roads within each quadrant of the roundabout as well as upgrades of access roads coming from the north, east and west.

The main features of the project include:

  • 7 km of equivalent single carriageway
  • Earthworks (45,000 cubic meters)
  • Pavement (30,000 square meters of concrete)
  • Drainage (2 km of drains)
  • Traffic signs (according Ghana standards plus 4 Gantries)
  • Street Lighting: (68 Light poles)
